Weekly Shōnen Magazine

Weekly Shōnen Magazine, published by Kodansha, first appeared on newsstands on March 17, 1959, and has since become one of the three dominant shōnen anthologies in Japan, alongside Weekly Shōnen Jump and Weekly Shōnen Sunday. From its earliest issues, the magazine cultivated a reputation for publishing series that often appealed to an older readership than its competitors, with many of its titles exploring themes of social commentary, romance, and drama alongside the expected action and sports fare. This editorial flexibility allowed the magazine to serialize landmark works such as Tohru Fujisawa's Great Teacher Onizuka, which ran from 1997 to 2002 and became a cultural touchstone for its irreverent humor and nuanced treatment of education and delinquency.

At its commercial zenith in the 1990s, the magazine regularly sold over four million copies per week, making it one of the highest-circulation periodicals in Japan. While print numbers have declined in the digital era, the magazine continues to launch new series and maintain a loyal subscriber base. Its digital presence has expanded through Kodansha's K Manga platform, and many of its hit series have been adapted into anime, live-action films, and stage productions, extending the magazine's influence well beyond the printed page.

The magazine has serialized a remarkable number of award-winning series. Hajime no Ippo, which began in 1989, won the Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category in 1991. Great Teacher Onizuka took the same prize in 1998. In 2015, both Ace of Diamond and The Seven Deadly Sins were recognized, the latter becoming a global multimedia franchise.
