Weekly Shōnen Jump
Japan"The world's best-selling manga magazine"
About
Weekly Shōnen Jump hit newsstands on July 11, 1968, as a bi-weekly called simply Shōnen Jump. Shueisha launched it to challenge the already-popular Weekly Shōnen Magazine and Weekly Shōnen Sunday. After just a few months, the magazine switched to a weekly schedule in 1969, adopting its current name. Go Nagai became the first major creator to serialize in Jump, kicking off Mazinger Z on October 2, 1972, which helped put the magazine on the map.
By the mid-1990s, Jump was printing around six million copies every week, making it the highest-circulation manga magazine in history. Its secret weapon was a ruthless reader survey system: editors fielded up to 30,000 postcards per week, and series that ranked low were cancelled, often within ten weeks. This Darwinian process forced creators to hook readers fast and keep them hooked. The magazine's philosophy centered on the 'shonen lifestyle', themes of courage, friendship, and self-improvement, which resonated deeply with its young male audience.
Jump's stable of series reads like a who's who of manga royalty: Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Slam Dunk, Fist of the North Star, and Hunter x Hunter, among many others. These titles didn't just sell magazines, they spawned anime empires, blockbuster films, and endless merchandise. The magazine's influence extends far beyond Japan; Viz Media publishes the North American edition, and the digital platform Shōnen Jump+ offers exclusive series to a global audience.
Print circulation has dropped to around 1.1 million as of June 2024, when Yu Saito took over as editor-in-chief at age 43. But the brand's licensing business is stronger than ever. Recent hits like Kagurabachi sold 2.2 million copies in its first seven volumes, proving Jump can still launch new sensations. The magazine operates from Shueisha's Tokyo headquarters and continues to define shōnen manga for generations of readers worldwide.
