Watchmen
Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons
Overview
Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins created Watchmen, a comic book limited series that redefined the medium. Published monthly by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987, then collected as a single volume in 1987, the story grew from a proposal Moore submitted using Charlton Comics characters. Editor Dick Giordano convinced him to invent original heroes instead, fearing the originals would be rendered unusable. The result is a dense, layered narrative that deconstructs the superhero archetype while reflecting Cold War anxieties.
The series unfolds in an alternate 1985 where costumed vigilantes once roamed freely. Their presence shifted history: the U.S. won the Vietnam War, and Watergate stayed buried. Now, with the Soviet Union on the brink of nuclear war, most heroes have retired or work for the government. The murder of a government-sponsored hero, the Comedian, pulls a handful of them back into action. Moore focuses on their personal struggles and moral compromises rather than flashy battles.
Gibbons employed a strict nine-panel grid layout throughout, with recurring symbols like a blood-stained smiley face. Each issue except the last includes fictional documents that deepen the backstory. A subplot involves a pirate comic, Tales of the Black Freighter, read by a minor character, which mirrors the main narrative. The story jumps through time and space, with parallel scenes and repeated imagery creating a sense of synchronicity. Watchmen earned a spot on Time's list of the 100 Best Novels. The BBC's Nicholas Barber called it "the moment comic books grew up," though Moore disagreed, arguing that most comics remained childish. The series spawned a 2009 film by Zack Snyder, a video game, and several sequel miniseries, though Moore has distanced himself from all adaptations.
