    About

The Washington Huskies represent the University of Washington in Seattle across a wide spectrum of NCAA Division I sports. The athletic department fields teams in American football, basketball, baseball, and rowing among others. In 1922, Associated Students selected the name Huskies to replace the previous moniker Sun Dodger, aiming for a mascot that conveyed tangible strength rather than weather patterns.

Following the 2024 conference realignment, the program joined the Big Ten Conference after decades in the Pac-12. This shift placed the team in a new competitive landscape alongside traditional rivals like USC and Oregon. The football squad plays its home games at Husky Stadium, a venue known for its steep slopes and high capacity that creates a challenging environment for visiting opponents.

    History

The university established its first intercollegiate athletic teams shortly after its founding in 1861. By 1892, the school had organized formal competitions, laying the groundwork for what would become one of the largest athletic programs in the nation. The decision to adopt the Husky nickname in 1922 marked a turning point in the identity of the student body and fan base.

Football has seen significant milestones, including national championships in 1991 and 2000. The program accumulated 18 conference titles over its history before the 2024 transition to the Big Ten. Recent seasons have highlighted the intensity of the new conference schedule, with the team facing tough competition early in the 2026 campaign.
