About This Album
The Spice Girls released their debut studio album Spice on November 4, 1996 through Virgin Records. This record introduced the world to five distinct personalities who championed a message of female empowerment and friendship. The group wrote the majority of the material themselves while collaborating with producers Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard to craft a sound that blended dance-pop with rhythmic rap verses.
Production required significant effort from the band members, who rejected an initial mix of the tracks and insisted on having Mark Spike Stent remix the entire album to match their vision. This decision ensured the final product retained the raw energy they wanted for their public image. The album features ten songs including the global hit single "Wannabe" which topped charts in over thirty countries shortly after its release.
Critical reception was initially divided as some reviewers dismissed the project as a manufactured pop product. Despite this skepticism the album achieved massive commercial success selling approximately 23 million copies worldwide. It earned certifications including seven times platinum in the United Kingdom and six times platinum in the United States establishing the group as the best-selling girl group in history.
