Wandering Son

Takako Shimura crafted Wandering Son, a deeply personal manga that ran for over a decade in Comic Beam between 2002 and 2013. The story follows Shuichi Nitori, a young girl who feels trapped in her male body, as she navigates the confusing waters of puberty alongside Yoshino Takatsuki, a boy who wishes he were a girl. Their friendship forms the heart of this narrative, which explores gender identity, dysphoria, and the social pressures faced by transgender youth. Shimura originally planned to write about an older high school student but shifted focus to younger characters to better capture the specific anxieties of growing up before hormonal changes fully set in. Enterbrain collected the serialized chapters into fifteen volumes from 2003 to 2013, while Fantagraphics Books brought the series to North America starting in July 2011. The work received recognition at the tenth Japan Media Arts Festival in 2006 and later inspired a twelve-episode anime adaptation directed by Ei Aoki. While some critics questioned the emotional realism of the young cast, the series remains notable for placing transgender experiences at its core without relying on stereotypes.[edit]
