Overview
Origin Story
Walter Hartwell White Sr. was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A gifted chemist, he co-founded Gray Matter Technologies with his former girlfriend Gretchen and his friend Elliott Schwartz. However, due to personal conflicts and wounded pride, Walt abruptly left the company, selling his shares for a pittance. Gray Matter later became a multi-billion dollar enterprise, leaving Walt with deep resentment and a sense of failure. He married Skyler, had a son Walter Jr. (who has cerebral palsy), and later a daughter Holly. To support his family, Walt worked as an overqualified high school chemistry teacher and took a humiliating second job at a car wash.
On his 50th birthday, Walt was diagnosed with inoperable stage III lung cancer. Facing death and financial ruin, he decided to use his chemistry expertise to manufacture methamphetamine. He teamed up with former student Jesse Pinkman, and the two began cooking high-purity blue meth in an RV. Walt adopted the alias Heisenberg and quickly rose through the criminal underworld, eventually becoming a major drug kingpin. Over the course of five seasons, Walt's actions destroyed his family, led to the deaths of many, and culminated in his own death in a meth lab.
Personality
Walter White begins the series as a meek, passive, and conflict-avoidant man, often described as having a bland personality. However, as he delves deeper into the drug trade, his latent traits of extreme pride, ego, arrogance, and vindictiveness emerge. He is highly intelligent, methodical, and capable of cold calculation. His need for control and recognition drives him to increasingly ruthless actions, including murder. Walt's transformation is a tragic fall driven by wounded pride and a hunger for significance, rather than purely altruistic motives for his family.
