Wakakozake
"A Solitary Gourmet's Guide to Tokyo"
Chie Shinkyu
Overview
Murasaki Wakako is a twenty-six-year-old office worker who turns her Friday nights into culinary expeditions across Tokyo. After enduring the frustrations of corporate life, she seeks refuge in small izakayas and bars where she pairs specific drinks with carefully chosen meals. The series treats each outing as a self-contained story, focusing on the sensory details of food and the quiet joy of eating alone.
Chie Shinkyu launched this seinen manga in September 2011 through Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Zenon. Readers can find the collected chapters in tankōbon volumes starting from May 2013. By February 2025, the print run had expanded to twenty-four volumes, maintaining a steady release schedule that continues today.
The franchise has transcended its origins as a comic book to become a long-running television phenomenon. A live-action drama starring Rina Takeda began airing in 2015 and has produced eight seasons by early 2025. Season eight premiered in January 2025 in 4K resolution, while season nine is scheduled for an October 2025 debut featuring locations in Hokkaido and Fukushima.
