Future tapped Drake and Tems for this brooding R&B cut that became the centerpiece of his ninth album I Never Liked You. Built around a sample of Tems' own song "Higher" from her 2020 EP For Broken Ears, the track flips her ethereal vocals into a loop that underpins the whole thing. Producers FnZ and ATL Jacob keep the beat sparse and heavy, letting the three voices trade verses about trust issues and complicated love.

The song dropped as a single on May 3, 2022, and shot straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That made it Future's first number one as a lead artist, Drake's tenth, and Tems' first. It also topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and hit number two on the Billboard Global 200. In Canada it went double platinum, while the RIAA gave it triple platinum status for moving 3 million units.

Director X helmed the music video, released three days after the single. It racks up over 100 million views on YouTube and features the three artists in moody, dimly lit settings that match the song's introspective feel. At the 2023 Grammys, "Wait for U" won Best Melodic Rap Performance and got a nod for Best Rap Song. It also took home BET Awards for Best Collaboration and Best Collaboration at the BET Hip Hop Awards.[edit]
