About This Album
Vroom Vroom, the third EP from British singer Charli XCX, arrived on 26 February 2016 via her own imprint, Vroom Vroom Recordings, an affiliate of Atlantic Records. The project marked a decisive break from her earlier polished pop, trading radio-friendly hooks for a jagged, avant-garde sound. Production came from the late Scottish producer SOPHIE, whose signature style, squelching industrial textures, distorted synths, skittering beats, and aggressive Auto-Tune, defined the record. Across five tracks, Charli's lyrics revel in hedonism and defiance, matching the music's confrontational energy.
At the time, the EP confused some fans and critics who expected the Charli of "Boom Clap" and "Fancy." But its reputation grew steadily, and by the late 2010s it was widely cited as a foundational document of hyperpop. The title track, with its opening line "Lavender Lamborghini, roll up in a blue bikini," became an underground anthem. In February 2026, both The Fader and Paste Magazine published lengthy tenth-anniversary retrospectives, with Paste calling the EP "genre-defining" and The Fader describing it as "a sudden supernova." Rolling Stone also included the title track on a 2025 list of the greatest songs of all time.
Beyond its musical impact, Vroom Vroom established the creative partnership between Charli XCX and SOPHIE, who would later collaborate on tracks like "After the Afterparty" and Charli's 2017 mixtape Pop 2. The EP's influence can be heard in the work of artists like 100 gecs, Dorian Electra, and Kim Petras, and its aesthetic, sleek, futuristic, and unapologetically weird, has become a touchstone for experimental pop.
