Voltas Limited is the biggest name in Indian air conditioning, a position it has defended for decades. It also runs a strong commercial refrigeration business and engineering solutions arm, with projects across the Middle East and Africa.

The company was incorporated on September 6, 1954, as a joint venture between Tata Sons and Volkart Brothers, a Swiss trading firm. The name 'Voltas' blends the two. That Tata lineage gives it instant trust in India, and its ACs are often the default choice for families. Noel Tata chairs the board, while Mukundan Menon serves as CEO and managing director.

Voltas has built its reputation on reliability and a vast after-sales service network, which matters a lot when you're buying a machine that runs through scorching summers. It faces stiff competition from LG and Samsung in other appliance categories, but in ACs it stays ahead thanks to brand loyalty and an extensive distribution reach.
