    About This Album

Coldplay walked into the studio in late 2006 worn out from the X&Y tour, unsure if the band had a future. Brian Eno, brought in as a producer, pushed them to scrap old habits. He told Chris Martin to imagine the album cover first, then write songs that matched it. The result was a record that swapped their earlier arena-rock sound for something stranger: layered orchestras, church bells, ambient drones, and lyrics full of historical and religious imagery.

Recording happened in four different places. The band built a makeshift studio in a London bakery, then moved to a New York magic shop, a converted nunnery in Barcelona, and finally a church in the same city. Eno encouraged experimentation, letting the band use unconventional instruments like toy pianos and vintage synthesizers. The album's title came from a phrase Martin saw on a painting by Frida Kahlo, which read "Viva la Vida" (Long Live Life) alongside a watermelon slice. The cover chose Eugène Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, linking the album's themes of revolution and mortality.

Released on June 12, 2008, the album became a global event. It hit number one in 36 countries and shipped 3 million copies in its first week. The title track became Coldplay's first song to top the charts in both the US and UK, winning Song of the Year at the Grammys. Critics praised the band's ambition, though a few found the grand gestures hollow. Over time, the album has been called their most cohesive and adventurous work, a moment when Coldplay stopped playing it safe.
