Virginia Tech Hokies

The Virginia Tech Hokies are the intercollegiate athletic teams representing Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a public land-grant research university in Blacksburg, Virginia. The program fields 22 varsity sports and competes in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The football team, established in 1892, plays its home games at Lane Stadium, which seats 66,233. The Hokies have won eight conference football championships and made 36 bowl appearances, with a 14-22 record. Their closest brush with a national title came in 1999, when they finished No. 2 in the final BCS standings after a Sugar Bowl loss to Florida State.

Beyond football, the men's basketball team won the National Invitation Tournament in 1973 and 1995 and reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 1967 and 2019. The program has produced 22 individual national champions in track and field, wrestling, and swimming. While the Hokies have yet to win an NCAA team title, they claimed the 2007 national championship in bass fishing, a non-NCAA sport. The football program began on October 21, 1892, when the team played its inaugural game against St. Albans Lutheran Boys School from Radford, Virginia, winning 14-10. The Hokies joined the Southern Conference in 1921 and later became a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953, though they left in 1965 to join the Metro Conference. They rejoined the ACC in 2004 and were placed in the Coastal Division until the division's dissolution in 2023.

Under coach Frank Beamer, who led the program from 1987 to 2015, the Hokies achieved sustained success, including a streak of 23 consecutive bowl appearances from 1993 to 2015. The 1999 season saw Virginia Tech go 11-0 in the regular season and reach the BCS National Championship Game, where they lost to Florida State 46-29. The team has been ranked in the final AP Poll 20 times and appeared in the College Football Playoff rankings twice at the end of a season. [edit]
