Villarreal CF, known as the Yellow Submarine, is a Spanish football club from the town of Villarreal in Castellón. Founded on March 10, 1923, by local pharmacist José Calduch, the club spent decades in regional and lower national divisions before reaching La Liga for the first time in 1998. Since then, Villarreal has become a consistent top-flight side, with only a brief relegation in 2012 followed by immediate promotion. The club's biggest achievement came in 2021 when they won the UEFA Europa League, beating Manchester United on penalties to claim their first major trophy. Villarreal has also reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals twice, in 2006 and 2022, punching well above its weight against Spain's traditional giants. The nickname comes from the bright yellow kits and the club's underdog status. Home matches are played at Estadio de la Cerámica, a 23,008-seat stadium known for its intimate atmosphere and passionate local support.

Villarreal is often cited as a model for small clubs achieving sustained success through smart management, strong scouting, and a focus on youth development. Villarreal CF was founded on March 10, 1923, as Club Deportivo Villarreal by José Calduch, who acquired land for the first pitch, Campo del Villarreal. The club spent its early decades in regional leagues, playing at the stadium later known as El Madrigal. Promotion to the Segunda División came in the 1950s, but it was not until 1998 that Villarreal reached La Liga for the first time. Under coach Paquito, the club consolidated its top-flight status and qualified for the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002, winning it to enter the UEFA Cup.

The 2004-05 season marked a turning point. Villarreal finished third in La Liga and reached the UEFA Champions League semifinals in 2005-06, led by Argentine playmaker Juan Román Riquelme. They lost to Arsenal in controversial fashion. The club continued to compete in Europe but was relegated in 2011-12. They bounced back immediately, winning the Segunda División title in 2013. Under Marcelino García Toral, Villarreal finished fourth in 2014-15 and sixth in 2015-16, reaching the Europa League semifinals.

The greatest moment came in 2020-21 under Unai Emery. Villarreal won the UEFA Europa League, defeating Manchester United 11-10 on penalties in the final. The following season, they reached the Champions League semifinals again, knocking out Juventus and Bayern Munich before losing to Liverpool.
