Viktor Yushchenko

Viktor Andriiovych Yushchenko, born on 23 February 1954 in the village of Choruživka, is a Ukrainian politician and economist who served as the third president of Ukraine from January 2005 to February 2010. Before entering politics, he built a career in banking, rising to become the governor of the National Bank of Ukraine in 1993. In that role, he steered the country through hyperinflation and introduced the hryvnia, Ukraine's national currency. From 1999 to 2001, he served as prime minister under President Leonid Kuchma, but after his dismissal, he turned to opposition and founded the Our Ukraine Bloc, which became the most popular political force in the 2002 parliamentary elections. Yushchenko's path to the presidency was marked by drama and danger. As the informal leader of the opposition, he ran against Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in the 2004 presidential election.
