Mortensen's three Oscar nominations place him among the most respected actors of his generation. His performance in Green Book won the Critics' Choice Award, and the film itself won the Academy Award for Best Picture. He is one of the few actors to have been nominated for an Oscar for playing a villain (Eastern Promises) and a hero (Captain Fantastic) in the same decade. His work in The Lord of the Rings earned him a Saturn Award and a SAG Award as part of the ensemble. He has also been honored with lifetime achievement awards from several film festivals.
