Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum, often called the V&A, holds more than 2.8 million objects across six sites in the United Kingdom. Its main building in South Kensington, London, covers 12.5 acres and contains over 145 galleries. The collection spans 5,000 years of creativity, from ancient Egyptian ivory carvings to contemporary fashion. The museum is the world's largest institution dedicated to decorative arts and design.

Founded in 1852 with profits from the Great Exhibition, the V&A originally opened as the Museum of Manufactures at Marlborough House. It moved to its current site in 1857 and was renamed in 1899 to honor Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The museum's first director, Sir Henry Cole, described it as a schoolroom for everyone, bringing great design to people who could never afford to travel. Today, the V&A operates branches including the Young V&A in Bethnal Green, V&A Dundee in Scotland, and the upcoming V&A East in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The museum's collection is organized into specialized departments covering ceramics, furniture, fashion, textiles, sculpture, photography, metalwork, prints, drawings, paintings, and more. It holds the national collection of theatre and performance, including costumes, set designs, and archives. The V&A also runs a major exhibition program, with shows like Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty and David Bowie Is drawing record crowds. The V&A's origins lie in the Government School of Design, established in 1832 at Somerset House. After the Great Exhibition of 1851 generated a surplus of £186,000, Prince Albert urged that the money be used to create a cultural district in South Kensington devoted to art and science education. The Museum of Manufactures opened at Marlborough House in 1852, with a collection drawn largely from the Exhibition. It moved to its current site in 1857 as the South Kensington Museum.

The museum was renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1899 when Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the new building. The queen reportedly wanted to call it the Albert Museum, but was overruled. The building was finally completed on June 26, 1909, more than 50 years after work began. The area of Brompton was rebranded as South Kensington by museum authorities to sound more fashionable, and the district became known informally as Albertopolis.

In 1983, the museum gained trustee status under the National Heritage Act, becoming independent from direct government control. Major acquisitions include the purchase of Canova's Three Graces jointly with the National Galleries of Scotland for £7.6 million in 1994. Under Tristram Hunt's directorship since 2017, the V&A has expanded with the opening of V&A Dundee in 2018 and the development of V&A East, with the Storehouse opening in 2025 and the Museum scheduled for 2026.
