Burton's journey began with deep roots in sports through her grandfather, former New England Patriots running back Ron Burton. After a collegiate career at Northwestern University where she earned two All-Big Ten selections, she entered the pros as the seventh overall pick in the 2022 draft by the Dallas Wings. A move to the expansion Valkyries franchise in 2025 launched her into stardom, leading the team to its first-ever WNBA Finals appearance in 2026 while anchoring their defense alongside teammates Gabby Williams and Kiah Stokes. Veronica Grace Burton was born on July 12, 2000, in Newton, Massachusetts, into a family with a strong athletic pedigree. Her path to professional basketball was heavily influenced by her grandfather, Ron Burton, a running back who played for the New England Patriots from 1980 to 1984. Growing up with this legacy provided both inspiration and a unique set of expectations. Unlike many prospects who were immediately recruited by top-tier programs, Burton's road to stardom involved a detour through junior college before she transferred to Northwestern University.

At Northwestern, Burton transformed herself into a dominant force under coach C.J. Walker. She developed a reputation as one of the nation's best defensive guards, earning back-to-back All-Big Ten honors in 2021 and 2022. Her time in Evanston was defined by resilience and a relentless work ethic that belied her initial status as a transfer student. This period of development culminated in her selection as the seventh overall pick by the Dallas Wings in the 2022 WNBA Draft, marking the end of her amateur career and the beginning of her professional ascent.
