About
Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law Salomon Arpels opened their first boutique on the Place Vendôme in Paris in 1896, launching a house that would redefine luxury jewelry. They rejected the rigid conventions of the time to create pieces that felt alive, weaving nature-inspired motifs like flowers, animals, and fairies into gold and gemstones. This artistic approach distinguished the Maison from competitors who focused solely on stone weight or traditional settings.
The brand developed signature techniques that became its hallmark, most notably the mystery setting (serti mystérieux). This method allowed gemstones to be set without visible metal prongs, creating the illusion that they were floating within the metal. Their designs often featured moving parts, such as butterflies with wings that fluttered when worn, turning jewelry into kinetic art.
Today, Van Cleef & Arpels operates as a subsidiary of the Swiss luxury group Richemont. While the corporate structure has evolved, the company maintains its headquarters in the historic 1st arrondissement of Paris. The house continues to produce high jewelry, fine jewelry, watches, and perfumes for a global clientele that includes royalty and celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Princess Grace of Monaco.
Mission
History
The house began operations in Paris in 1896, quickly gaining attention for its unique aesthetic that merged artistic whimsy with technical precision. Alfred Van Cleef and Salomon Arpels introduced the mystery setting, a revolutionary technique where gems are hidden beneath each other without visible metal supports. This innovation allowed them to create fluid, organic designs that seemed to move.
Throughout the 20th century, the brand expanded its reach beyond Paris, establishing boutiques in London, New York, and Monte Carlo. The family maintained control until the mid-20th century, eventually selling shares to the Rémy Cointreau group before becoming part of Richemont in 1997. Despite these ownership changes, the creative direction remained rooted in the original vision of blending nature with jewelry.
In recent years, the Maison has focused on expanding its physical presence in key markets. A new, larger boutique opened in Hong Kong in August 2026, followed by a renovated space in Madrid later that same month. These locations serve as cultural hubs that showcase the brand's latest collections and craftsmanship to high-net-worth clients.
