Vampire Knight
Matsuri Hino
Overview
Yuki Cross wakes up one morning to find her life irrevocably changed. Her childhood friend Zero Kiryuu, a human vampire hunter who once vowed to destroy the undead, has been bitten and is now losing his humanity. This personal tragedy forces Yuki into a dangerous position at Cross Academy, where she serves on the Disciplinary Committee protecting the secret of the Night Class. These students are vampires living among humans under strict supervision, a fragile peace maintained by Headmaster Kaien Cross.
The narrative expands beyond school politics as Yuki discovers her own hidden lineage. She is not merely an orphan adopted by Kaien; her bloodline connects her to the ancient Purebloods led by Kaname Kuran. This revelation turns a simple romance into a complex struggle involving identity, memory, and the potential collapse of the world's delicate balance between species.
Matsuri Hino serialized the manga in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine from November 2004 until May 2013. The story collected into 19 volumes and later received a sequel titled Vampire Knight: Memories. Viz Media handled the English release, publishing the series from 2006 through 2009. The franchise has moved beyond print with anime adaptations, drama CDs, and video games, though the core narrative remains rooted in Hino's original run.
