VAIO launched in 1996 as the Video Audio Integrated Organization, a premium laptop line from Sony that quickly carved out a niche for itself. The brand became famous for its distinct design language and high build quality, appealing to professionals who needed power without sacrificing portability. Unlike many competitors that rushed to cut costs, VAIO maintained rigorous standards that made its machines stand out in a crowded market.

The company's independence began in 2014 when Sony sold its PC division to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP). This move allowed VAIO to operate separately while Sony kept minority ownership and intellectual property rights. In 2025, JIP transferred its controlling stake to Nojima, a major electronics retailer, marking another shift in the brand's corporate history.
