Utopia

July 28, 2023 marked the arrival of Travis Scott's fourth studio album Utopia, a sprawling concept record released through Cactus Jack Records and Epic. The project followed his 2018 hit Astroworld and arrived alongside a surreal short film titled Circus Maximus. This 19-track collection blends hip-hop, trap, Southern rap, and neo-psychedelia into a chaotic yet cohesive sonic landscape. Scott worked with an extensive roster of collaborators including Beyoncé, Drake, Future, SZA, Playboi Carti, Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Westside Gunn, and Ty Dolla $ign.

Production duties fell to Scott himself and frequent collaborator Mike Dean, with significant contributions from Kanye West who also provided creative direction and vocal ad-libs. Other producers included Metro Boomin and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk. Critics noted the heavy bass, distorted synths, and ethereal vocals created a nightmarish atmosphere that felt both euphoric and unsettling. While some reviewers praised the ambition and atmospheric depth, others found the length and density led to repetitive themes reminiscent of West's Donda.

The album achieved immediate commercial dominance by debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 with approximately 465,000 equivalent album units in its first week. This release made history when all 19 tracks entered the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, a feat not seen since Michael Jackson's era. Five singles supported the rollout: "K-Pop" featuring Young Thug and Playboi Carti, "Delresto (Echoes)" with SZA, "Meltdown" with Drake, "I Know ?", and "Fein" featuring Playboi Carti. As of early 2024, the RIAA certified the album Platinum for sales exceeding one million units in the United States. [edit]
