Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz are a professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City, Utah, competing in the NBA's Western Conference. Founded in 1974 as an expansion franchise in New Orleans, the team took its name from the city's vibrant jazz music scene. After five seasons, the franchise relocated to Utah in 1979, keeping the Jazz name despite the desert setting. Over the decades, the Jazz built a reputation for disciplined play, strong coaching, and a fiercely loyal fan base. The team's golden era came in the 1990s, when the pick-and-roll duo of John Stockton and Karl Malone led them to back-to-back NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998, only to fall both times to Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. Though a championship has remained elusive, the Jazz have made the playoffs 29 times in 50 seasons in Utah, including a record 20 straight appearances from 1986 to 2005. The franchise is known for its consistency, having posted winning records at home for 26 consecutive seasons from 1989 to 2015, an NBA record. The Jazz began as an expansion team in New Orleans for the 1974-75 season, with Hall of Famer Pete Maravich as the franchise's first star. Maravich's flashy style and scoring prowess made him a fan favorite, but the team struggled to win, never posting a winning record in New Orleans. In 1979, the franchise moved to Salt Lake City, where it initially played at the Salt Palace. The early Utah years were tough, but the 1981 hiring of coach Frank Layden turned things around. Layden won Coach of the Year in 1984, the same year the Jazz won their first division title. The 1984 draft brought John Stockton, and a year later, Karl Malone arrived via the draft. Under coach Jerry Sloan, who took over in 1988, Stockton and Malone developed into one of the most efficient pick-and-roll tandems in NBA history. The Jazz became perennial contenders, reaching the Western Conference Finals in 1992, 1994, and 1996 before breaking through to the NBA Finals in 1997. They pushed the Chicago Bulls to six games but lost. In 1998, they returned to the Finals, only to lose again to the Bulls in six games, with Michael Jordan hitting the series-clinching shot in Game 6. After Stockton retired in 2003 and Malone left in 2004, the Jazz rebuilt around Andrei Kirilenko and later Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2007. The post-Sloan era saw a playoff drought in the early 2010s, but the team rebounded with Rudy Gobert, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, and Donovan Mitchell. The Mitchell-Gobert Jazz posted the league's best record in the 2020-21 season but fell in the second round of the playoffs both years.
