Urban Outfitters began in 1970 as a small shop called Free People on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, founded by Richard Hayne, Judy Wicks, and Scott Belair. The store was renamed Urban Outfitters and formally incorporated in 1976. From that single boutique, the company has grown into a multinational lifestyle retailer with a footprint across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, several Western European countries, Poland, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. Its headquarters remain in Philadelphia, now at the Navy Yard, where a major expansion was announced in June 2026, committing at least $150 million in capital and creating over a thousand jobs.

The merchandise mix spans women's and men's fashion, footwear, beauty, accessories, activewear, and housewares, with a notable selection of vinyl records and cassettes that harkens back to its music-centric roots. Much of the inventory comes from the company's own wholesale division, which designs private-label collections alongside third-party brands. The brand has also ventured into exclusive collaborations, such as the Monchhichi x Sanrio bag charm collection, and runs frequent promotions like a back-to-school sale with 30% off all jeans.

Urban Outfitters operates under the corporate umbrella URBN, which also includes Anthropologie, Free People, FP Movement, Terrain, and Menus & Venues. This portfolio allows URBN to target different demographics, with Urban Outfitters appealing to a younger, trend-driven crowd. The brand's stores are designed as curated boutiques, often hosting local art and music events. While it has faced criticism over the years for cultural appropriation and copycat designs, Urban Outfitters remains a cultural touchstone for its audience, known for spotting and amplifying emerging trends.
