University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines

Tucked into the western edge of Paris, the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ) is a public research university created in 1991. It operates across eight campuses, with its main sites in Versailles, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, and Mantes-en-Yvelines, and since 2002 it has also had a presence in Hauts-de-Seine. This makes it the largest center for higher education and research in the Paris area outside the central city.

UVSQ is a constituent member of the federal Paris-Saclay University, one of Europe's most dynamic research clusters. The university enrolls around 20,000 students each year and offers programs spanning the natural sciences, social sciences, political science, engineering, technology, and medicine. It maintains strong ties with national research bodies like the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA), which means students and faculty work alongside some of the country's leading scientists.

The university has carved out a niche in atmospheric sciences, health, and Arctic studies. Its Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Observatory regularly opens its doors to the public, hosting events like the 2026 Science Festival. UVSQ also belongs to the University of the Arctic network, and in March 2026 it was announced that the Malaurie Institute of Arctic Research – Monaco-UVSQ would be dedicated to studying the circumpolar work of Professor Jean Malaurie. To that end, UVSQ partners closely with research institutions like CNRS and CEA, and it participates in international networks such as the University of the Arctic. The goal is to create an environment where students and researchers can tackle pressing global issues, from infectious diseases to environmental change, while contributing to the intellectual life of the Île-de-France region. UVSQ was born in 1991, part of a wave of new universities created by the French state to ease pressure on the crowded institutions of central Paris and to bring higher education to the fast-growing western suburbs. The founding campus took root in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, a new town that was itself a product of 1960s urban planning, and the university quickly expanded to other cities in the Yvelines department.

From the start, UVSQ positioned itself as a research-intensive institution. It built partnerships with CNRS and CEA, and by the early 2000s it was already making a name for itself in atmospheric sciences and health. In 2002, the university added campuses in Hauts-de-Seine, extending its reach even closer to Paris.

The 2010s brought structural changes. UVSQ joined the UniverSud Paris grouping and later became a founding member of the federal University of Paris-Saclay, a major consolidation of research and teaching in the region. That move aligned the university with one of Europe's most ambitious academic projects. In 2020, UVSQ awarded an honorary degree to Columbia Law professor George Bermann, a sign of its growing international profile.

Recent years have seen UVSQ deepen its Arctic research ties. It joined the University of the Arctic network, and in March 2026 it was announced that the Malaurie Institute of Arctic Research – Monaco-UVSQ would be established to preserve and study the work of Jean Malaurie, the renowned Arctic explorer.
