On a late summer morning in 1883, the University of Texas opened its doors to 221 students in a single building on a 40-acre plot north of downtown Austin. Today that campus spans 431 acres, enrolls more than 53,000 students, and sits at the center of one of the fastest-growing tech and culture hubs in America. The university's creation traces back to the Texas Constitution of 1876, which set aside land for a university, and the Permanent University Fund, fed by oil revenues from West Texas, now ranks among the largest public university endowments in the nation. That financial bedrock has helped UT Austin grow into a research powerhouse, with expenditures exceeding $1.06 billion in fiscal year 2023.

UT Austin's academic portfolio spans 18 colleges and schools, from the Cockrell School of Engineering to the McCombs School of Business, the Moody College of Communication, and the Dell Medical School. The campus houses seven museums, seventeen libraries, the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, and the Blanton Museum of Art. Specialized facilities extend far beyond Austin: the J. J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin and the McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains of West Texas, where astronomers have studied the night sky since 1939. The university became a member of the Association of American Universities in 1929, a mark of its standing among North America's top research institutions.

Longhorn athletics are woven into the university's identity. The football team has claimed four national titles, baseball has won six, and men's swimming and diving has taken sixteen. Across all men's and women's sports, no other Big 12 school has won more championships. The brand extends beyond sports through the burnt orange color, the Hook 'em Horns hand gesture, and a global alumni network of over 500,000 Texas Exes. The university's faculty and alumni include 13 Nobel laureates, 25 Pulitzer Prize winners, 3 Turing Award recipients, and 2 Fields Medalists.
