The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the administrative and regulatory organization for football across Europe. Founded in 1954, it is one of six continental confederations within FIFA and operates as a non-profit association under Swiss law. UEFA oversees 55 member associations and organizes some of the most prestigious football competitions in the world, including the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA European Championship, and the UEFA Europa League.

UEFA's headquarters are located in Nyon, Switzerland, at the House of European Football. The organization generates billions of euros annually through broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, and licensing, primarily from its club competitions. It reinvests the majority of its revenue into football development, solidarity payments, and grassroots initiatives across Europe.

Beyond competitions, UEFA sets and enforces rules for European football, including Financial Fair Play regulations, and works to promote inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation in the sport. Its strategic vision for 2024-2030, titled United For Success, focuses on five pillars: ensuring football accessibility for all, demonstrating leadership and collaboration, nurturing competitiveness, promoting growth while preserving solidarity, and embracing sustainability. UEFA was founded on June 15, 1954, in Basel, Switzerland, with 25 national football associations as founding members. Its creation followed the model of FIFA and was driven by the need for a dedicated European football authority to coordinate international matches, competitions, and development. The initial headquarters were in Paris, France, before relocating to Switzerland.

The UEFA Champions League, the organization's flagship club competition, originated not from UEFA itself but from French sports newspaper L'Equipe. Editor Gabriel Hanot and colleague Jacques Ferran drafted plans for a Europe-wide club competition to be played on Wednesday nights under floodlights. In April 1955, representatives from 16 clubs met and approved the rules. FIFA initially hesitated but eventually authorized the competition on condition that UEFA would organize it. The first European Cup kicked off in the 1955-56 season.

Over the decades, UEFA expanded its portfolio: the European Championship launched in 1960, the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) in 1971, and the Champions League rebranding in 1992. Financial Fair Play was introduced in 2013 to promote financial stability. In 2021, UEFA faced a major challenge when 12 clubs attempted to form a breakaway European Super League, which UEFA fought successfully. The 2024-25 season introduced a new Champions League format with 36 teams using a Swiss model group stage. [edit]
