    About

União Desportiva de Leiria emerged on June 6, 1966 from the merger of three local clubs: Sport Clube União de Leiria, Grupo Desportivo de Marrazes, and Clube Desportivo de Porto de Mós. The new entity quickly established itself in the central region of Portugal, building a loyal following among fans who identify as Leirienses. For years, the club served as a vital part of the local cultural fabric before facing severe financial turbulence that led to its original dissolution in 2018.

The organization was reborn under new ownership and navigated through the lower divisions, eventually securing promotion back to Liga Portugal 2. Today, the team plays its home matches at Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, a modern facility with a capacity of 23,888 seats. The stadium honors a prominent regional figure and remains the central hub for matchday activities and community gatherings.

    History

The club reached its peak performance during the early 2000s when it spent eleven consecutive seasons in the Primeira Liga between 2000 and 2012. A defining moment occurred in the 2004–05 season when the team secured third place in the top flight, earning qualification for European competition in the UEFA Cup. This era coincided with the arrival of José Mourinho as head coach in 2002, who transformed the squad into a serious contender for domestic honors.

Success continued into the next decade with a victory in the Taça da Liga during the 2007–08 campaign. The final against Sporting CP marked the club's first major trophy since its founding. Despite these achievements, financial mismanagement plagued the organization in later years. By 2018, the original entity collapsed due to insolvency, forcing players and staff to disband. Fans rallied to support the re-founded club, which restarted in the lower tiers and worked its way back up to the second division.

European campaigns during the golden era included notable matches against FC Porto and Anderlecht. The team also consistently challenged in the Taça de Portugal, reaching the semi-finals multiple times. Recent seasons have focused on stability and avoiding relegation while maintaining a competitive presence in Liga Portugal 2.
