About
TV Tokyo (channel 7, call sign JOTX-DTV) is the flagship station of the TX Network, one of Japan's six major commercial television networks. It is owned by TV Tokyo Corporation, a subsidiary of TV Tokyo Holdings Corporation, which is controlled by Nikkei, Inc., Japan's leading financial newspaper publisher. Headquartered in the Sumitomo Fudosan Roppongi Grand Tower in Roppongi, Minato, Tokyo, the station launched on April 12, 1964, as the last of Tokyo's five private VHF broadcasters to go on air.
Unlike its bigger rivals Fuji TV and Nippon TV, TV Tokyo carved out a niche by focusing on anime, economic news, and quirky variety shows. The network has produced globally recognized anime hits such as Naruto, Pokémon, and Initial D, which have become cultural touchstones far beyond Japan. It also operates a nationwide network of 12 stations under the TX Network banner and has expanded into content distribution through its CaaS (Contents As A Service) strategy.
TV Tokyo's programming mix includes live sports like professional baseball and sumo wrestling, as well as the long-running shopping program TV Tokyo Shopping. The station is known for its lean operations and willingness to experiment, often launching shows that other networks would consider too risky. Its audience share remains smaller than the top three networks, but its influence in anime and digital content punches well above its weight.
Mission
TV Tokyo's corporate purpose, established in 2023, is: "To warm the heart and sometimes ignite a passion. To deeply reach each individual and lead to a slightly better tomorrow." Its mission is: "To challenge the 'ordinary' and create the yet unseen 'interesting' together." The group's long-term vision, TV Tokyo VISION 2035, aims to become a "Global IP Media" by expanding multi-platform content offerings with a user-first approach, centered on the CaaS (Contents As A Service) concept.
History
TV Tokyo began broadcasting on April 12, 1964, as Science TV Tokyo Channel 12, a commercial educational station focused on science and cultural shows. The venture quickly ran into financial trouble; by 1968 it was on the verge of bankruptcy. To rescue the station, a new company called Tokyo Channel 12 Production, Ltd. was established on July 1, 1968, taking over operations and stabilizing the business.
Over the next decades, the station rebranded multiple times: to Tokyo Channel 12 in 1973, Television Tokyo Channel 12, Ltd. in 1981, and finally TV Tokyo Corporation in 2004. In 1983, it became the flagship of the newly formed TX Network, linking affiliates across Japan. The analog-to-digital transition came in 2011, with TV Tokyo moving from VHF channel 12 to UHF channel 23 (virtual channel 7).
In 2023, the company undertook a major rebranding for its 60th anniversary, unveiling a new logo (the first change in 25 years), a new tagline, and a fresh corporate philosophy. The following year, it launched TV Tokyo VISION 2035, a long-term plan to evolve from a traditional broadcaster into a global IP media company.
