Tunic
"A cryptic, beautiful action-adventure that trusts you to figure it out."
Overview
Tunic drops you into a ruined fantasy world as an anthropomorphic fox, with little more than a stick and a vague sense of purpose. This is not a game that holds your hand. Instead, it hides its secrets behind an isometric camera that obscures pathways and treasures, and presents its story through a constructed language you are not meant to fully decipher. The core loop involves exploring a lush but crumbling landscape, fighting creatures, and gradually piecing together the world's lore by finding pages of an in-game instruction manual. Those pages offer cryptic clues, drawings, and notes that slowly illuminate the game's systems and backstory. The goal: free a fox spirit trapped in a crystal, but the journey is anything but straightforward.
Designer Andrew Shouldice spent seven years crafting Tunic as his first major project, starting solo in 2015. He wanted to recapture the feeling of playing NES classics like The Legend of Zelda (1986) as a kid, trying to make sense of a game without context. The result is a challenging action-adventure that blends gentle visuals and music with tough combat and puzzles. Shouldice was joined by composer Terence Lee, audio designer Kevin Regamey, and others, with publisher Finji coming aboard in 2017. The game launched on Windows, macOS, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022, then hit Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in September.
Critics praised Tunic for its art direction, clever design, and rewarding sense of discovery, though some found the difficulty uneven and the potential for getting stuck frustrating. It won Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game at the 26th D.I.C.E. Awards and took home Artistic Achievement and Debut Game at the 19th British Academy Games Awards. For players who enjoy unraveling mysteries and mastering a world that doesn't explain itself, Tunic is a rare treat.
Gameplay
You control a small fox in a fixed isometric view. The camera often hides paths, enemies, and secrets, forcing you to explore carefully. Combat is deliberate and punishing: you start with a stick, then find a sword, shield, and other tools. Rolling, blocking, and timing are essential. Boss fights are tough, sometimes requiring multiple attempts. But combat is only half the experience. The world is filled with puzzles, from simple block-pushing to multi-layered riddles that span the entire map.
The standout mechanic is the in-game instruction manual. You collect its pages scattered across the world. Each page contains maps, item descriptions, lore, and hints, all written in a fictional language. You must interpret the drawings and symbols to learn how to play. Some pages reveal secret codes you can enter on the title screen to unlock cheats or bonuses. The manual is not just a gimmick; it is the key to understanding the game's deepest secrets, including the famous Golden Path puzzle that took the community weeks to solve.
Story
The fox wakes up on a beach with nothing. A distant crystal holds a trapped fox spirit. That is your goal, but the game never says it directly. You piece together the story from the manual pages, environmental details, and a few cryptic NPCs. The world is the ruin of a once-great civilization, now overrun by monsters. You learn about a hero who failed, a heir who continues the cycle, and a dark truth about the nature of the world.
The climax forces you to fight a series of bosses, culminating in a confrontation with the Heir. Beat the game once, and you get a bittersweet ending. But the true ending requires solving the deepest riddle: the Golden Path, a hidden sequence of inputs that rewrites the final encounter. Completing that reveals the full story, a more hopeful conclusion, and credits that thank the player for their perseverance. The narrative is sparse but emotionally resonant, built on discovery rather than exposition.
