Daler Mehndi released his eponymous studio album in 1998 under the Saregama label. The record marked a shift for the artist from regional folk performances to a polished international pop sound. It features ten tracks that blend traditional Punjabi instruments like the tumbi and dhol with modern electronic production.

Mehndi composed and wrote all the lyrics himself, aiming to create music that could cross language barriers. He described the title track as a challenge to make a song for the world, using phonetic sounds that mimic musical instruments rather than conveying specific words. This approach helped the album gain traction across South Asia and the Middle East upon release.

The title track became a massive hit, known for its repetitive hook and energetic performance. The accompanying music video was notable for its extensive use of chroma key technology, placing Mehndi against surreal backdrops that were uncommon in Indian music videos at the time. While the album did not chart on Western lists initially, it established Mehndi as a leading figure in the Bhangra King era. [edit]
