For her third studio album, Madonna stepped into the producer’s chair and never looked back. Released June 30, 1986, on Sire Records, True Blue found the singer co-writing and co-producing all nine tracks alongside Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray. The result was a polished, confident pop statement that traded the playful provocation of Like a Virgin for something more mature. Its themes of love, marriage, and devotion drew directly from her then-recent marriage to actor Sean Penn. Musically, the album blends dance-pop with subtle nods to Motown girl groups and Latin pop, driven by synthesizers, drum machines, and layered backing vocals. Songs like the aching ballad Live to Tell, the controversial Papa Don’t Preach, and the shimmering La Isla Bonita showcased a vocalist willing to take risks. The Who’s That Girl World Tour followed, becoming one of the highest-grossing tours by a female artist in 1987.

Five singles hit the US top five, with three reaching number one. True Blue topped charts in 28 countries, spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, and went septuple platinum in the US. Critics praised its production and Madonna’s growth as a songwriter.
