TriStar Pictures

TriStar Pictures began its journey in 1982 under the name Nova Pictures. It was a collaborative creation of Columbia Pictures, CBS, and HBO, with an initial strategy centered on acquiring rights for films across various distribution channels, including video, broadcast, and pay cable. A year later, the company rebranded as Tri-Star, a change made to distinguish itself from a documentary series.

By 1987, Columbia Pictures had taken full control, absorbing the interests of CBS and HBO, and merging with Columbia Pictures Entertainment. Tri-Star was later revived as a distinct label in 1988. When Sony Corporation acquired Columbia Pictures Entertainment in 1989, Tri-Star became an integral part of Sony Pictures Entertainment. The hyphen was officially dropped in 1991, solidifying its current name.[edit]
