Overview
The Toyota Supra is a sports car and grand tourer that first hit the road in 1978. Its name comes from the Latin prefix meaning "above" or "to surpass." The early generations shared DNA with the Toyota Celica, but by 1986 the Supra became its own model. Over the decades, the Supra evolved through five generations, with the latest arriving in 2019 as a joint venture with BMW, sharing its platform with the G29 Z4. Production of the GR Supra ended in March 2026.
The Supra's inline-6 engine heritage traces back to the Toyota 2000GT, and its first three generations used the M engine family. The car gained a cult following for its performance and tuning potential, especially the fourth-generation A80, which became an icon in car culture. The fifth-generation Supra, built by Magna Steyr in Austria alongside the BMW Z4, offered a turbocharged inline-6 or a 2.0-liter turbo four. While sales figures were modest, the Supra's legend looms large among enthusiasts.
