Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly known as Spurs, is a professional football club based in Tottenham, North London. The club competes in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Founded on September 5, 1882, by a group of schoolboys from Hotspur Cricket Club, the team originally played under the name Hotspur FC. The club's emblem features a cockerel standing on a football, a symbol used for over a century. Their Latin motto, Audere est Facere (to dare is to do), has guided the club through its history.

Spurs have traditionally worn white shirts and navy blue shorts as their home kit since the 1898–99 season. In 1901, they became the first non-League club to win the FA Cup since the Football League's formation in 1888. They were the first club in the 20th century to achieve the League and FA Cup Double, winning both in the 1960–61 season. In 1963, Tottenham became the first British club to win a UEFA competition, the European Cup Winners' Cup. They also won the inaugural UEFA Cup in 1972, becoming the first British club to win two different major European trophies.

Domestically, Spurs have won two league titles, eight FA Cups, four League Cups, and seven FA Community Shields. In Europe, they have one European Cup Winners' Cup and three UEFA Cup/Europa League titles. They reached the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 2019. The club's primary rivalry is with Arsenal in the North London derby, and they also have a fierce rivalry with Chelsea. Tottenham is owned by ENIC Group, which purchased the club in 2001. Tottenham Hotspur was founded on September 5, 1882, by a group of schoolboys from Hotspur Cricket Club and the local grammar school, meeting under a gas lamp on the High Road in Tottenham. The name Hotspur was inspired by Sir Henry Percy, a character in Shakespeare's works. The club turned professional in 1895 and moved to White Hart Lane in 1899. In 1901, as a Southern League club, they stunned English football by winning the FA Cup, the only non-League team to do so since the Football League began.

The 1960s were a golden era. Under manager Bill Nicholson, Spurs won the Double in 1960–61, retained the FA Cup in 1962, and lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. Nicholson also led the club to the UEFA Cup in 1972 and the League Cup in 1971 and 1973. The 1980s saw further FA Cup success in 1981, 1982, and 1991, as well as a second UEFA Cup triumph in 1984. The club's first Premier League season in 1992–93 was followed by a League Cup win in 1999 and another in 2008.

In the 2010s, Spurs emerged as a consistent top-four side under Harry Redknapp and later Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino led the team to the 2019 Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool. After a period of managerial turnover, Ange Postecoglou took charge in 2023 and ended a 17-year trophy drought by winning the 2024–25 Europa League.
