    About

Tomorrowland is more than a music festival. It is a fully immersive fantasy world where electronic dance music meets elaborate storytelling, theatrical stage design, and a global community known as the People of Tomorrow. Founded in 2005 by Belgian brothers Manu and Michiel Beers, the event transforms De Schorre provincial park in Boom, Belgium, into a sprawling fairy-tale kingdom each summer. Over 16 stages host hundreds of artists spanning house, techno, trance, hardstyle, and everything in between, but the real draw is the atmosphere. Think towering mainstage structures that look like castles, dragons, or enchanted forests, synchronized fireworks, and a crowd waving flags from more than 200 countries.

What sets Tomorrowland apart from other festivals is its commitment to narrative. Each edition follows a unique theme that influences everything from the decorations to the official aftermovie soundtrack. Past themes include The Book of Wisdom, The Elixir of Life, and Amicorum Spectaculum. The festival has grown from a single-day gathering of 10,000 people to a two-weekend phenomenon that sells out 400,000 tickets in minutes. It has also spawned international editions in Brazil, France, and soon Thailand, plus a record label, a radio station, and even a DJ school. Armin van Buuren once called it the Woodstock of 2017, and for many devotees, it remains the pinnacle of the EDM calendar.

    History

The first Tomorrowland took place on August 14, 2005, a single Sunday in Boom with 10,000 attendees. Brothers Manu and Michiel Beers, who had been organizing small club nights, decided to create a festival that felt like a storybook. The lineup included Sven Väth, Armin van Buuren, and Justice, but the production was modest compared to what came later. By 2011, the festival had expanded to three days and was drawing 180,000 people. In 2012, organizers introduced the iconic Mainstage theme concept, beginning with The Book of Wisdom, and attendance grew to represent over 200 nationalities.

The 2013 edition sold out in record time and was named the most listened-to music festival on the planet by the International Dance Music Awards. Tomorrowland won Best Music Event at the IDMAs five years in a row. In 2017, the festival moved to two consecutive weekends for the first time, welcoming more than 400,000 People of Tomorrow. The 2020 and 2021 editions were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the festival returned in 2022 with renewed energy. The 2024 edition celebrated 20 years with the theme Our Story, looking back at two decades of growth from a local gathering to a global brand.

    Cultural Impact

Tomorrowland has reshaped the electronic music festival landscape by proving that production value and storytelling can be as important as the lineup. Its model has been copied by events around the world, from Ultra to EDC, but few match its theatrical ambition. The festival has also become a symbol of Belgian culture, with the prime minister attending in 2017. Beyond the music, Tomorrowland has built a media empire: One World Radio broadcasts year-round, the Tomorrowland Music label releases tracks from emerging artists, and the Tomorrowland Foundation runs music and arts schools in Nepal, India, and South Africa, serving over 600 children. The phrase People of Tomorrow has entered the lexicon as shorthand for a generation of global festival-goers who value unity, diversity, and shared experience.

    Controversies

In 2017, a fire destroyed the original mainstage just days before the festival was set to begin. Organizers scrambled to build a replacement, delaying the opening by two hours. The event went ahead but with a reduced capacity for the first day. A separate incident occurred at a Tomorrowland concert in Barcelona when a stage caught fire due to a technical malfunction, forcing a cancellation. Some local residents in Boom have also voiced concerns over noise and traffic, though the festival maintains strong support from the municipality.
