    Overview

Sam Masur and Sadie Green first meet in a hospital waiting room in 1987. A Jewish boy with a leg disability bonds over video games with an African-American girl whose mother died in a car accident. They reconnect at Harvard University in the late 1990s and launch a creative partnership that defines their adult lives. Under the pseudonym Marx, they create Prism, a platformer that launches them to fame before they face personal tragedies and professional betrayals.

The novel spans three decades to explore how their relationship evolves from deep platonic love into a strained professional partnership. Zevin weaves together the real-world struggles of Sam and Sadie with the digital worlds they build. Despite often being in love with one another, they never become lovers. Instead, they maintain a "creative marriage" that defies traditional romantic tropes while navigating themes of grief, plagiarism, and the nature of art.

Zevin draws inspiration from her own experiences with gaming to show how virtual worlds can serve as escapes or reflections of reality. The title borrows from Macbeth's soliloquy in Shakespeare's Macbeth, reflecting the repetitive yet persistent nature of time. Critics praised the book for making technical game design details accessible and emotionally resonant while challenging the idea that deep intimacy must be sexual.
