Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege
"The evolution of tactical shooters"
Overview
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is a tactical first-person shooter that strips away the single-player campaign and focuses entirely on tense, team-based multiplayer combat. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal and released in December 2015 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, it later arrived on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2020. The game emphasizes close-quarters strategy, where every bullet hole and breach charge matters. Players choose between Attackers and Defenders in modes like hostage rescue, bomb defusal, and area control. There is no narrative campaign, but offline training modes help newcomers learn the ropes.
Siege was born from the cancellation of Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Patriots, a more story-driven project that struggled with technical issues. Ubisoft rebooted the franchise by focusing on what made the series unique: realistic counter-terrorism operations. The development team consulted actual CT units and studied historical sieges, like the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege, to create authentic scenarios. Powered by the AnvilNext 2.0 engine and RealBlast technology, nearly every surface can be destroyed, allowing players to carve new sightlines or blow holes through floors. This destructibility is the game's core mechanic, turning static rooms into dynamic killboxes.
Critics praised Siege for its intense, tactical multiplayer but initially knocked its sparse content and slow progression. Sales started slow, but Ubisoft's games-as-a-service approach turned things around. Regular free updates, new operators, and seasonal events built a dedicated community. By late 2020, the game had surpassed 70 million players and became a major esports title, with ESL backing its competitive scene. Many now consider it one of the best multiplayer shooters on the market, a reputation earned through years of support rather than a flashy launch. A spin-off, Rainbow Six Extraction, launched in 2022, reusing Siege's operators in a PvE setting.
Gameplay
Matches are five versus five, with Attackers breaching and Defenders fortifying. The Preparation Phase lets Defenders set up traps and reinforce walls while Attackers scout with tiny drones. Once the Action Phase starts, there are no respawns until the next round. Each player picks an Operator, a character with a unique gadget. Thermite can melt through reinforced walls with his exothermic charge. Mute jams enemy electronics. Smoke deploys toxic gas. The roster has grown from 20 at launch to over 70 by 2025.
Destruction is the star. Shotgun blasts punch holes big enough to crawl through. A single bullet leaves a small peek-hole. Explosives can collapse floors or blow out exterior walls. Sound matters too, footsteps on different materials give away positions. The game modes are Hostage, Bomb, and Secure Area, plus a Deathmatch mode added later. Ranked play uses a tiered system from Copper to Champion, with skill-based matchmaking.
Story
Rainbow Six Siege skips a traditional campaign entirely. Lore comes through operator biographies, seasonal cinematics, and event descriptions. The Rainbow team is an international counter-terrorism unit that responds to global threats. Each operator has a backstory: Ash is an Israeli-American breaching specialist, Bandit is a German chemist turned explosives expert. The narrative is deliberately minimal, letting gameplay take center stage. Ubisoft chose this approach to keep the focus on multiplayer tactics rather than story-driven missions.
