Overview
Tokyo Revengers is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Ken Wakui. It was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from March 1, 2017, to November 16, 2022, with its chapters collected in 31 tankōbon volumes. The story follows Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old part-time video store clerk whose life has hit rock bottom. He learns that his middle school ex-girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, and her younger brother Naoto have been killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang (Toman), a notorious criminal organization. The next day, while standing on a train platform, Takemichi is pushed onto the tracks. As he braces for death, he suddenly finds himself transported twelve years into the past, back to his final year of middle school in 2005. This time leap ability triggers every time he shakes hands with Naoto, who in the past is still alive. Realizing he has a chance to save Hinata and alter the future, Takemichi resolves to rise through the ranks of the Tokyo Manji Gang and prevent the tragic events that lead to her death, while also uncovering the mysteries behind the time travel itself.
The series blends action, science fiction (time travel), thriller, and delinquent drama. Its core themes include redemption, sacrifice, friendship, and the struggle to change a predetermined fate. The story explores the consequences of violence and the lengths one will go to protect loved ones, often contrasting the harshness of gang life with moments of deep emotional vulnerability.
An anime television series adaptation produced by Liden Films aired from April to September 2021. A second season aired from January to April 2023, and a third season from October to December 2023. A fourth season is set to premiere in October 2026. A live-action film adaptation was released in Japan in July 2021, with a two-part sequel, Tokyo Revengers 2: Bloody Halloween, released in April and June 2023. A stage play adaptation, Tokyo Revengers: The Stage, was performed in Japan in 2021, with additional runs in subsequent years.
