Tokio Hotel are a German pop rock band who have been active since 2001. As of 2024, they are on a world tour celebrating two decades of music, still featuring the same four original members: Bill Kaulitz on vocals, his twin brother Tom on guitar, bassist Georg Listing, and drummer Gustav Schäfer. Tokio Hotel started in the unlikely setting of Magdeburg, a small city in former East Germany. In 2001, four teenagers, identical twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz, bassist Georg Listing, and drummer Gustav Schäfer, came together to form a band called Devilish. They were between 13 and 15 years old. Bill's appearance on the German TV talent show Star Search in 2001 caught the eye of producer Peter Hoffman, who began working with the young group.

They played small gigs around their hometown, honing their sound. After signing with Sony BMG, they recorded a demo, but the label dropped them before an album could be released. Undeterred, they signed with Universal Music Group in 2003 and changed their name to Tokio Hotel. With the help of producers David Jost and Pat Benzner, they refined their songwriting and musicianship.

Their debut single "Durch den Monsun" dropped in August 2005 and shot to No. 1 in Germany and Austria within weeks. The album Schrei followed in September 2005, selling over 500,000 copies worldwide and spawning four top-five singles in German-speaking countries. The band's early success was explosive, but it came with challenges. Bill's voice changed as he grew, so some tracks were re-recorded for the 2006 re-release Schrei: So Laut Du Kannst.
