October 1, 1950 marks the official birth of Toei Company when Keita Gotō established the firm from the ashes of the pre-war Tokyo Film Distribution. The studio quickly built a reputation for high-energy productions that blended traditional Japanese storytelling with modern spectacle. Today the company operates out of Kyōbashi in Chūō-ku while maintaining historic production facilities in both Tokyo and Kyoto. It owns thirty-four movie theaters nationwide and holds a majority stake in Toei Animation, creating a vertical empire that spans film, television, publishing, and increasingly interactive media.

The conglomerate stands as one of Japan's "Big Three" alongside Toho and Shochiku, dominating the domestic market through a vast library of franchises. Key properties include Dragon Ball, One Piece, Sailor Moon, Kamen Rider, and the Super Sentai series which launched the American Power Rangers. Unlike competitors focused solely on theatrical releases, Toei leverages its shareholdings in various TV networks to distribute dramas and variety shows globally. Its financial strength relies heavily on the enduring international popularity of these animated and tokusatsu titles.

In April 2026 the company made a strategic move into gaming by launching Toei Games, an in-house publishing label designed to develop video games based on its intellectual property portfolio. This shift aims to capture value beyond traditional licensing deals as the brand navigates the interactive entertainment market. Later that year in September, Toei Animation partnered with Lionsgate to distribute projects like Monkey Quest in the United States. These recent developments underscore a broader effort to expand Western reach while managing complex licensing disputes such as the refutation of unconfirmed French theme park deals for Dragon Ball.
