Gowers's achievements are extraordinary. The Fields Medal is often described as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, and he is one of only a handful of mathematicians to have made fundamental contributions to both functional analysis and combinatorics. His Gowers norms have become indispensable tools in additive combinatorics and theoretical computer science. His election to the Royal Society and his knighthood further underscore his standing. He has also been a leading voice in the open-access movement and, more recently, in the debate over AI's role in mathematics, making him a truly influential figure both within and beyond academia.
