Tigres UANL

Tigres UANL, officially Club Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, is a powerhouse in Mexican football. Based in San Nicolás de los Garza, part of the Monterrey metropolitan area, the club was founded in 1960 as Club Deportivo Universitario de Nuevo León and adopted its current name in 1967, representing the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. They play their home games at Estadio Universitario de la UANL, a fortress known for its passionate fan base. Competing in Liga MX, the top tier of Mexican soccer, Tigres has become one of the most successful clubs in the country, both domestically and internationally.

The team's first major trophy came in the 1975–76 Copa México, a 3–2 aggregate win over Club América that marked the first official national title for a club from Nuevo León. Since then, Tigres has accumulated eight Liga MX titles, three Copa MX crowns, and four Campeón de Campeones trophies. On the international stage, they won the CONCACAF Champions League, finished as runners-up in the 2015 Copa Libertadores, and made history by reaching the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup final, becoming the first Mexican and CONCACAF club to compete for the global title. Subregionally, they have also claimed two Campeones Cup titles and one North American SuperLiga.

Since 1996, the club has been managed by Sinergia Deportiva, a sports management company linked to Cemex. Their traditional gold and blue colors are recognizable across Mexico. Tigres shares a fierce rivalry with C.F. Monterrey, known as the Clásico Regiomontano, representing the two major professional clubs in Nuevo León. The club was founded on March 7, 1960, as Club Deportivo Universitario de Nuevo León by the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. In 1967, the team rebranded to Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, adopting the tiger as its mascot. The early decades saw modest success, with the first major trophy arriving in the 1975–76 Copa México, a 3–2 aggregate victory over Club América. That victory made Tigres the first club from Nuevo León to win an official national title.

The club's first Liga MX title came in the 1977–78 season under coach Carlos Miloc. A second league title followed in the 1981–82 season, but then came a long drought. Tigres reached the final again in 2001–02 but lost to América. The modern era of dominance began in the 2010s. Under coach Ricardo Ferretti, Tigres won the Apertura 2011 title, ending a 29-year wait. They followed with Apertura 2015, Apertura 2016, Apertura 2017, Clausura 2019, and Clausura 2023 titles, cementing their status as a Liga MX powerhouse.

Internationally, Tigres made their mark by winning the CONCACAF Champions League in 2020, defeating Los Angeles FC 3–0 on aggregate. That victory earned them a spot in the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup, where they reached the final after eliminating Ulsan Hyundai and Palmeiras, before losing 1–0 to Bayern Munich. In 2015, they were runners-up in the Copa Libertadores, falling to River Plate in the final. The club has also won the Campeones Cup twice, in 2018 and 2023, and the North American SuperLiga in 2009.
