Three 6 Mafia is an American hip hop group. They are famous for pioneering the Memphis rap sound and popularizing the horrorcore subgenre. They notably won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2006 for "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" from the film Hustle & Flow, a historic achievement for a hip hop group. They started making music in Paul's makeshift home studio, crafting beats from eerie samples and 808 drum machines. To cultivate a local following, they pressed their raw, homemade recordings onto cassettes, selling them directly to fans out of car trunks and at local barbershops and swap meets. In 1993, the group expanded further with the addition of Koopsta Knicca, who brought an even darker edge to their evolving sound. Lord Infamous died on December 20, 2013, of a heart attack at age 40. Gangsta Boo was found dead on January 1, 2023, at 43.
