These Dreams

"These Dreams" was released in 1986 as the third single from Heart's self-titled eighth studio album, which had come out in July 1985. The song became the band's first and only number one on the Billboard Hot 100, hitting the top spot on March 22, 1986. It was also one of four Top 10 singles from the album, a remarkable run that included "What About Love," "Never," and "Nothin' at All." The track was produced by Ron Nevison at The Plant studio in Sausalito, California.

The song was written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page. Taupin, best known for his long partnership with Elton John, originally wrote the lyrics under the title "Boys in the Mist" with Stevie Nicks in mind. But Nicks turned it down because the words felt too close to what she would have written herself. Page convinced Taupin to change the title to "These Dreams," taken from a line in the bridge, and restructured the song. The demo was sent to Heart, and Nancy Wilson ended up singing lead, a rare move for her, she usually handled harmonies and guitar while Ann took the spotlight.

The official music video, directed by Jeff Stein, got heavy rotation on MTV. It features Nancy singing while looking over a pool of water and playing a distinctive sail-shaped electric guitar built by luthier David Petschulat. Ann appears singing from the shadows. The video uses a shorter single version that omits the second strophe of the original verses. As of 2025, the clip has over 112 million views on YouTube. [edit]
