Overview
Origin Story
Theon Greyjoy was born the youngest son of Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands, and his wife Alannys. He had two older brothers, Rodrik and Maron, and an older sister, Yara (called Asha in the books). When Theon was roughly eight years old, his father launched a rebellion against the Iron Throne. The uprising failed after King Robert Baratheon's forces crushed the Iron Fleet and besieged Pyke. As a condition of peace, Balon was forced to surrender his sole surviving son as a hostage to Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell. Theon was taken north, where he was raised alongside the Stark children, Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Rickon, receiving the same education in combat, strategy, and lordship as Eddard's own sons. Though treated well, he was always aware of his status as a political pawn, a fact that bred a deep insecurity and a desperate need to belong.
Personality
Theon is defined by a brittle arrogance that masks profound insecurity. He craves respect and recognition, often boasting of his heritage as a Greyjoy of the Iron Islands, yet he is equally desperate for the approval of the Stark family who raised him. Quick-witted and charming when he wants to be, he also has a cruel streak, he makes light of serious situations and can be dismissive of those he considers beneath him. His need to prove himself leads him to reckless decisions, and when he finally gains power at Winterfell, he indulges in petty tyranny. After his torture at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, Theon is broken into a hollow, terrified shell. His arrogance is replaced by a cowering subservience, and he loses all sense of self-worth. Yet even in that darkness, a flicker of the old Theon remains, a desperate desire to be remembered as something more than a traitor and a failure. His eventual reclamation of his own name and identity reveals a core of courage and decency that had been buried but never fully extinguished.
Story Arc
Theon's journey is one of the saga's most harrowing. After Robb Stark sends him to the Iron Islands to secure an alliance, Theon chooses to betray the Starks, hoping to win his father's love. He captures Winterfell in a daring raid and proclaims himself Prince of Winterfell, but his rule is short-lived and brutal. When the Stark boys escape, he presents the charred bodies of two farm boys as proof of their deaths, an act that haunts him forever.
His downfall comes swiftly. Betrayed by his own men, Theon is captured by Ramsay Snow (later Bolton), who subjects him to relentless psychological and physical torture. Ramsay flays his fingers, knocks out his teeth, and breaks his spirit, reducing him to a whimpering slave known only as Reek. For years, Theon exists in this state, stripped of his name and will, forced to serve the man who destroyed him.
Redemption begins when Ramsay marries Sansa Stark. Theon, still called Reek, helps Sansa escape the castle walls, a small act of defiance that rekindles his sense of self. He flees to the Iron Islands and supports his sister Yara's claim to the Seastone Chair, though their uncle Euron steals the crown. Theon later rescues Yara from Euron's captivity, a mission that requires him to kill one of his own men, proving his loyalty has shifted.
His final act of redemption comes during the Battle of Winterfell against the Night King. Though terrified, Theon charges at the Night King to protect Bran Stark, the boy he once betrayed. He is killed, but in his last moments he whispers, 'My name is Theon Greyjoy,' reclaiming his identity fully before dying a hero.
