Overview
The Witcher is a single-player action role-playing game developed by CD Projekt Red and released in 2007. Based on the fantasy novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, it follows Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster hunter known as a Witcher. After surviving a massacre at the keep of Kaer Morhen, Geralt wakes with amnesia. He must recover his memories while navigating a world filled with political intrigue, a deadly plague, and conflicts between humans, elves, sorceresses, and ancient evils.
Players guide Geralt through the plague-ridden city of Vizima and surrounding areas. His choices shape alliances, romances, and multiple branching storylines. The game features five primary endings that depend on decisions made throughout the adventure. Moral gray areas define the experience, as few choices come with clear heroes or villains. The narrative picks up after the main events of Sapkowski's book saga and introduces key characters like Triss Merigold and the sorceress Saskia.
Gameplay
Gameplay mixes real-time combat with deep RPG systems. Geralt uses two swords, steel for humans and silver for monsters, plus bombs, traps, a crossbow, and throwable daggers. He casts five magical Signs including Aard for telekinetic blasts, Igni for fire, Yrden for traps, Quen for shields, and Axii for mind control. Combat relies on timing light and heavy attacks, dodges, and parries. Adrenaline bursts unlock powerful special moves.
Players brew potions that boost abilities but carry toxicity risks. They apply oils to weapons for extra damage against specific foes and meditate to change the time of day. A talent tree divided into Combat, Magic, and Alchemy paths lets players specialize their version of Geralt. The game includes a day-night cycle, dynamic weather, and a reputation system that changes how non-player characters respond. Quests often require investigation, tracking monsters by signs or clues, and dialogue choices that branch into different outcomes. The camera can switch between over-the-shoulder and top-down views.
Story
Geralt arrives in the Outskirts of Vizima with little memory of his past. He soon becomes involved in a search for the source of a mysterious plague and the return of the Wild Hunt. His journey takes him through swamps, sewers, and the Temple Quarter as he interacts with the Order of the Flaming Rose, elven rebels, and powerful sorceresses. Every major decision affects the political landscape and personal relationships. The story builds toward confrontations in the final chapter that determine one of five distinct endings.
