The Western Journal

The Western Journal started in 2008 as Western Journalism, the brainchild of Floyd Brown, a veteran political consultant who also founded the influential PAC Citizens United. Brown, who once ran the Young America's Foundation, built the site in Phoenix, Arizona, as a conservative counterweight to mainstream media. In 2015, Liftable Media, a company founded by Patrick Brown, acquired the outlet and folded it into a growing portfolio that already included the uplifting lifestyle site Liftable.com and Conservative Tribune. The rebrand to The Western Journal came in 2018, along with a push for more editorial rigor, hiring trained copy editors and introducing a corrections page.

The site's editorial philosophy is explicit about its religious grounding. Its about page states a commitment to biblical principles, citing Genesis 1:27 on human dignity and framing its worldview through Christian theology. Articles cover politics, culture, religion, and current events, often taking aim at what the site calls liberal media narratives. Founder Floyd Brown remains a regular contributor, writing on topics like Christian nationalism, election integrity, and figures such as Kari Lake. The site distributes content through its website, a daily email newsletter, a mobile app, and social media channels including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.

The Western Journal has drawn intense scrutiny over the accuracy of its reporting. Fact-checking organizations have described much of its output as sensationalized or misleading, with stories that critics say target immigrants and religious minorities. These assessments led major technology platforms to effectively blacklist the site, causing steep declines in social media reach and traffic. In 2019, The New York Times reported the site had more than 36 million readers and followers on Facebook, but platform enforcement actions have since reduced that footprint significantly.
