    About This Album

October 7, 1997 marked the arrival of Janet Jackson's sixth studio album The Velvet Rope through Virgin Records. This project emerged from a period of intense personal struggle following an emotional breakdown and deep depression. Jackson used the recording sessions to process her feelings, creating a concept album that functions as both a diary and a guide for others facing similar isolation. The title metaphorically represents the invisible barriers people build around themselves while emphasizing the human need to feel worthy of attention.

The production team included Jackson working closely with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to blend R&B, pop, trip hop, folk, jazz, rock, and techno into a cohesive sonic landscape. Guest spots from Q-Tip on "Free Xone" and violinist Vanessa-Mae added texture to the sound. The record tackles subjects rarely heard in mainstream pop at the time, including BDSM, same-sex relationships, and domestic violence. These bold lyrical choices earned Jackson a GLAAD Media Award and solidified her connection with the LGBTQ+ community.

Commercially, the album topped the US Billboard 200 for four weeks and reached number one in Denmark. It eventually sold eight million copies worldwide and received triple platinum certification from the RIAA. Three singles drove the campaign forward: "Got 'til It's Gone" won a Grammy for Best Music Video, "Together Again" became a global chart-topper, and "I Get Lonely" extended Jackson's streak of consecutive top-ten hits on the Hot 100 to eighteen.
