The Timberland Company

Nathan Swartz launched the business that would become The Timberland Company in Abington, Massachusetts, during 1952. The original vision centered on creating waterproof boots capable of withstanding harsh New England winters. That initial product line evolved into the Premium 6-Inch Waterproof Boot, a design instantly recognizable by its wheat-colored nubuck leather and yellow stitching. This specific model became the cornerstone of the brand's identity and remains its most significant commercial success.

VF Corporation acquired the company in 2011, transforming it from a regional workwear supplier into a global lifestyle entity. While the operational headquarters now sit in Stratham, New Hampshire, the brand retains strong ties to its American manufacturing roots. Recent years have seen a strategic shift toward high-fashion collaborations and modernized silhouettes that bridge the gap between outdoor utility and streetwear culture.

The current product portfolio extends well beyond footwear to include weather-resistant apparel, leather goods, eyewear, and accessories. In late 2026, the brand released a winter collection developed with Kith, featuring limited-edition upgrades to the classic 6-inch boot. They also introduced the Timberland 25, a lightweight iteration of their signature yellow boot designed for warmer conditions. These releases followed a viral collaboration with Telfar and an MLB fan gear partnership with New Era launched in August 2026. [edit]
